Manage file and folder permissions (CHMOD)

File and folder permissions control who can read, write, or execute the files and folder or directories on your hosting account.

You can update the permissions on files and folder from your hosting control panel.

1. Log in to your hosting control panel
2. Click on the File Manager button

3. Double click on the domains folder

4. Find the folder for the domain name of your website and double click on it

5. Double click on the public_html folder

6. Locate the file you want to update file permissions on and right click on it
7. From the dropdown, click Select Permissions

8. You will get a Set Permissions popup where you can set permission levels, permissions are split into Owner, Group and Public. Each category has three types of permissions: Read, Write and Execute, see below:

  • Read permissions allow a file or folder to be read
  • Write permissions allow a file or folder to be edited and modified
  • Execute permissions allow a file or folder to be run as a program

Generally speaking, unless custom settings are required, these are the standard permission levels required to have hosted files and folders function correctly online:

  • Files (including image files): 644
  • Folders: 755

9. Once you set the permission level (do NOT modify the Recursive toggle), click the Save button
