Domain ID protection
What is ID protection?
When you register a domain (like a .com or .net website), you’re required to provide personal contact information. This includes your name, address, phone number, and email. This information becomes part of a public database called WHOIS, which anyone can search. It’s like your digital fingerprint for your domain.
Why should you care? Without protection, your personal information is out in the open. It can lead to spam, unwanted contact, and even identity theft. That’s where ID protection (domain privacy) comes in. It’s a service that masks your info in the WHOIS database, replacing it with the information of a proxy service.
How does ID Protection work?
Imagine you want to send a letter without revealing your home address. You could use a P.O. Box instead of your real address. Domain privacy works similarly for your website. When you opt-in for ID protection, your personal info in the WHOIS database is anonymous.
What changes? Your name, address, phone number, and email are replaced with the information of the privacy service. If someone wants to contact you, they’ll go through the service, which then forwards any legitimate messages to you.
