How To Increase Sales With A WooCommerce Popup

Having interactive, lightbox popups on your website is essential as it allows you to capture your customers’ attention and push them into making a purchase. You can use WooCommerce*  popups in various ways to recover abandoned cart sales, offer coupons, grow your email list, promote sales, and so on. 

Quick note: WooCommerce is an eCommerce plugin used on WordPress websites. It lets you build an online store.

Popups are the best way to convert ordinary website visitors into paying customers, and if you use them correctly, you can:

  • Improve sales by informing your customers via automated messages (a popup when a visitor is about to leave your online store)
  • Improve sales with cross-sell popups by promoting related products
  • Improve sales with upsells by promoting a better-featured product
  • Recover abandoned cart sales with a free coupon discount or a free shipping option
  • Grow your social media following, email list so you can inform your customers of upcoming promotions, deals, etc.

This article will teach you how to boost sales and conversions using WordPress, WooCommerce, and the OptinMonster* plugin.

*Quick note: The OptinMonster plugin is a popup and lead generation tool used on WordPress websites. 

Preparation

Create A Free OptinMonster Account

To start creating your campaigns and coupons, you need to create a free OptinMonster account, install their WordPress plugin, and connect the account with your website. OptinMonster is free, but to use all the features listed in this article, you’ll need either the Pro or the Growth plans.

Go to the OptinMonster website and create a free account. 

It will ask you for your credit card details for verification purposes (anti-spam measures), but it won’t charge you.

Install The OptinMonster Plugin

Next, we need to install the OptinMonster plugin on our website. Log in to your WordPress Dashboard, head to Plugins > Add New, and input Marketing Toolkit into the search field in the upper-right corner:

Click Install Now to start the plugin installation. Once installed, click Activate to activate the plugin:

Connect Your OptinMonster Account

Head to the OptinMonster option in the left menu and click Launch the Setup Wizard to start the setup. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect your OptinMonster account with your website.

Once completed, you will be able to see the Campaigns option in your WordPress Dashboard under the OptinMonster menu in the left frame. 

Now we can start creating WooCommerce popups!

Campaigns

To start any of your campaigns, head to OptinMonster > Campaigns, and click Create New Campaign in the top-right corner.

WooCommerce Coupon Popup

Coupons are perfect if you want to increase sales, and it’s best to use popups to let your customers know there’s an active sale on your website.

Here are the steps to create a WooCommerce coupon popup with OptinMonster:

1. Click Create New Campaign, and then select the Popup campaign type.

2. Select the Coupon campaign template by clicking the Use Template button in the bottom row.

3. Fill in the popup name and select the website where you want to run it.

4. Design your new coupon by clicking on any element and adjusting the properties. You can add new features or remove existing details on your coupon, add new text, customize the colors and header, etc. The default coupon code is SAVE25, and you can change or remove this under the Success submenu.

5. Once ready, click Save to save changes.

6. Click Display Rules in the top menu, and adjust how and when the website will display your coupon popup to your visitors. Default rules are set to show the coupon after 5 seconds on all pages on the website. You can adjust the time interval, configure it to show after a specific time customer spent on your website, or select the specific pages where you want to show it.

That’s it! Now you can go ahead and publish the coupon on your website. 

Click the Publish button on top of the campaign screen to complete the setup, and toggle the Status option to Live. Click Save in the top-right corner to save changes.

WooCommerce Full Screen Popup

Fullscreen WooCommerce popup allows you to capture your visitor’s attention, welcome them to your store and maybe offer them a special discount.

Here are the steps to create a WooCommerce Fullscreen popup with OptinMonster:

1. Click Create New Campaign, and then select the Fullscreen campaign type.

2. Select the Estate campaign template by clicking the Use Template button in the bottom row.

3. Fill in the campaign name and select the website where you want to display it.

4. Design your new popup by clicking on any element and adjusting the properties. You can add new features or remove existing details on your coupon, add new text, customize the colors and header, etc. 

5. Once ready, click Save to save changes.

6. Click the Integrations tab and integrate OptinMonster with your mailing list provider.

7. Click Display Rules in the top menu, and adjust how and when the website will display your full screen popup to your visitors. Ensure it only shows to first-time visitors by clicking on time on page dropdown and selecting the New Visitor option.

That’s it! Now you can go ahead and publish the popup on your website. 

Click the Publish button on top of the campaign screen to complete the setup, and toggle the Status option to Live. Click Save in the top-right corner to save changes.

WooCommerce Upsell Popup

An upsell popup is perfect for nudging your customers to buy a more expensive product instead of the one they were considering. 

Here are the steps to create a WooCommerce Upsell popup with OptinMonster:

1. Click Create New Campaign, and then select the Popup campaign type.

2. Select the Flash campaign template by clicking the Use Template button in the bottom row.

3. Fill in the campaign name and select the website where you want to display it.

4. Design your new popup by clicking on any element and adjusting the properties. Change the timer to a Dynamic type, so it’s different for every customer. Remove the email field if you want customers to receive a coupon right away and add a text field with the coupon code using the Add Blocks feature.

5. Once ready, click Save to save changes.

6. Click Display Rules in the top menu, and follow the instructions to connect OptinMonster and WooCommerce. Once completed, configure the display rule to show the popup when the visitor checks the specific product.

That’s it! Now you can go ahead and publish the popup on your website. 

Click the Publish button on top of the campaign screen to complete the setup, and toggle the Status option to Live. Click Save in the top-right corner to save changes.

WooCommerce Cross-Sell Popup

A cross-sell popup allows you to promote a product related to something the customer is already buying. For example, if the customer is buying jeans, you could also offer belts or socks.

Here are the steps to create a WooCommerce Cross-Sell popup with OptinMonster:

1. Click Create New Campaign, and then select the Popup campaign type.

2. Select the Shopping campaign template by clicking the Use Template button in the bottom row.

3. Fill in the campaign name and select the website where you want to display it.

4. Design your new popup by clicking on any element and adjusting the properties. Remove the email field if you want customers to receive a coupon right away and add a text field with the coupon code using the Add Blocks feature.

5. Once ready, click Save to save changes.

6. Make sure that OptinMonster is connected to your WooCommerce plugin via the OptinMonster > Campaigns option, then click WooCommerce.

7. Click Display Rules in the top menu, select the WooCommerce cart contains option, and set it to the desired product. Create a new rule for each product that you want to cross-sell. 

That’s it! Now you can go ahead and publish the popup on your website. 

Click the Publish button on top of the campaign screen to complete the setup, and toggle the Status option to Live. Click Save in the top-right corner to save changes.

WooCommerce Gamified Popup

A gamified popup allows you to boost your customer engagement by using the “spin the wheel” fun game to receive a special deal or a discount. 

Here are the steps to create a WooCommerce Gamified popup with OptinMonster:

1. Click Create New Campaign, and then select the Gamified campaign type.

2. Select the Wheel-blue/green/red campaign template by clicking the Use Template button in the bottom row.

3. Fill in the campaign name and select the website where you want to display it.

4. Design your new popup by clicking on any element and adjusting the properties. You can adapt any coupon wheel section by clicking on the area itself and then editing the properties.

5. Once ready, click Save to save changes.

6. Click the Integrations tab and integrate OptinMonster with your mailing list provider.

7. Once completed, click Save again to save changes.

That’s it! Now you can go ahead and publish the popup on your website. 

Click the Publish button on top of the campaign screen to complete the setup, and toggle the Status option to Live. Click Save in the top-right corner to save changes.

WooCommerce Cart Abandonment Popup

Stores can lose a lot of money due to cart abandonment. This happens when the customer puts an item into the cart but never checks out. We recommend creating a special popup that appears when a user checks the shopping cart but attempts to leave the page.

Here are the steps to create a WooCommerce Cart Abandonment popup with OptinMonster:

1. Click Create New Campaign, and then select the Popup campaign type.

2. Select the Abandoning Checkout campaign template by clicking the Use Template button in the bottom row.

3. Fill in the campaign name and select the website where you want to display it.

4. Design the template by clicking on any element and adjusting the properties. 

5. Once ready, click Save to save changes.

6. Click Display Rules in the top menu, select the time on page option, and click Exit Intent. This option will show a popup immediately once the visitor shows intent to leave the page.

7. Scroll down, find the current URL path option, select exactly matches from the dropdown menu, and fill in your shopping cart page in the text field.

8. Once completed, click Save again to save changes.

That’s it! Now you can go ahead and publish the popup on your website. 

Click the Publish button on top of the campaign screen to complete the setup, and toggle the Status option to Live. Click Save in the top-right corner to save changes.
