It is very important to know and understand the meaning of the EPP codes status as it will display relevant information such as the domain expiry date, if it is currently processing a transfer, if the domain is safely locked, or why it suddenly stopped working. These details will come handy and will eventually make troubleshooting domain name issues a lot easier.

In the WhoIs record of a domain name, the EPP status codes are displayed next to the Domain Status information.

EPP Domain Status Codes

These are the two different types of EPP domain status codes:

  • Server Status Codes are status codes that are set by the registries, which take precedence over the Client status codes.
  • Client Status Codes are set by the registrars, which are sometimes automatically activated upon registration, while sometimes you have to request to activate it.

These status codes are both displayed once you perform a Whois lookup of your domain.

Server Status Codes

The following Server Status Codes are being set by your domain’s registry:

addPeriod

This is the grace period once the domain is registered. In case the registrar deletes the name of the domain in this time period, a cost of registration might credit the registrar. No issue and no action required for the domain name.

autoRenewPeriod

This is the grace period once the domain name expires and then automatically renewed by the registry. In case the registrar deletes the name of the domain in this time period, a cost of domain name renewal might credit the registrar. In case you do not intend to renew the domain name, contact the registrar to cancel the automatic renewal or discuss other options available.

inactive

This indicates that there are no delegated name servers for the domain name, which means the domain name is not activated in the DNS and would not resolved. In case the status code doesn’t change for a couple of days, contact your registrar and inquire about the reason why the processing is delayed. You may need to provide your documentation for the requirements of domain name registration.

ok

This standard status indicates that there are currently no pending actions, operations, or prohibitions. You can request for your registrar to enable status restrictions such as clientTransferProhibited, clientDeleteProhibited, and clientUpdateProhibited to keep your domain safe and help to prevent unauthorized updates, transfers, or deletions to your domain.

pendingCreate

This indicates that a request for your domain name to be created has been received and is currently being processed. In case the Top Level Domain (TLD) is on a special registration period (for example, Sunrise), this could mean that the domain name will most likely be allocated by the end of that period. Otherwise, contact your registrar to resolve this issue.

pendingDelete

The domain name will reflect this status for another five days, and then it will be removed from the database of the registry, which will allow anyone to register the domain. In case you see this status and you do not desire for your domain to be permanently deleted, it is important for you to contact your registrar immediately. Your domain name will be restored after resolving outstanding issues.

pendingRenew

This status code indicates that a request for domain name renewal has been received and is currently being processed. In case you do not intend to renew the domain name, contact the registrar to cancel the automatic renewal or discuss other options available.

pendingRestore

This code indicates that your registrar has requested the registry to restore your domain name from the redemptionPeriod status. Your domain name will be held in this status for a few days, while waiting for the registrar to provide confirmation of the request for restoration. In case your registrar fails to provide confirmation, the domain name will be reverted to redemptionPeriod status. Your registrar is required to submit the necessary documentation so your domain name would be restored; therefore you have to monitor your domain name for seven days. Once the seven-day period has expired and the domain name reverts to redemptionPeriod, you need to contact your registrar to inquire the cause of the delay of the delivery of the documentation.
